why norman shutters?

Quality. Service. Selection. Value.

These four aspects distinguish Norman Shutters from every other shutter manufacturer in our industry. Norman Shutters offers the most choices with more shutter materials, colors, shapes, and frame styles than any other manufacturer in the industry. Their outstanding price structure invites a great deal of business as well.

  • mortise-and-tenon joints

Mortise-and-tenon joints are designed to withstand shear stress and racking forces that occur when operating a shutter. This makes mortise-and-tenon the ideal joint for shutters.

  • prescription wood conditioning

A primary cause for warping is differing moisture content in the wood compared to its surrounding environment. You want the moisture content in the wood in your shutters to be be as close as possible to the moisture content of where you live. (Example: The humidity in Phoenix, Arizona is quite different from the humidity in Nashville, Tennessee.) Norman has a patented wood drying technique, Prescription Wood Conditioning, that dries the wood to emulate the environmental conditions of the location where the shutter will be installed. This greatly reduces warping, shrinking, and swelling. Norman is the only shutter manufacturer to do this on such a large scale.

  • raw materials

Norman begins with raw materials. There are no prefabricated wood components that are ordered from an outside party. Norman's quality starts at the source.

  • quarter sawn louvers

Craftsmen recognize that quarter-sawn wood is extremely stable. It provides a tighter grain and durable louvers which resist bowing and warping. Norman's wood louver's are made from 100% quarter-sawn wood. Norman is the only shutter manufacturer to use quarter-sawn wood.

  • reinforced stile

(The stile is the vertical support of the shutter that holds the louvers.)

Norman uses multiple layers of wood that are bonded together to strengthen the stability of the core of the stile. The result is a robust and hearty support system for your shutter panel. Norman is the only shutter manufacturer to use reinforced stiles.

  • hand finishing

Painters agree that applying several thin coats of paint is much better than one thick coat. Norman Shutter's finishing process involves multiple sequences of hand sanding and coating with thin layers of paint or stain. This is the only way to achieve a translucent, deep finish.

  • recessed magnets

No more bulky, plastic magnets that break with use. Norman only uses strong, round magnets that are embedded in the back of your shutter panels. They look better, operate better, and won't break with repeated use.

  • Stainless Steel staples

In all brands of shutters, staples hold the standard tilt rod to the louvers. Norman puts a coat of epoxy on the staples so that they are glued in when the shutter is assembled. This greatly reduces the risk of the tilt rod coming loose with operation.

  • PATENTED POLYPROPYLENE COATING

This coating is so good that Norman is the only shutter manufacturer to put a lifetime warranty on colorfastness. Applied to Norman's Woodlore line of shutters, polypropylene enhances the longevity of your shutters. It makes them water resistant, hard to scratch, resistant to staining, and easy to clean. Its UV inhibitors protect against color fading and yellowing.
